The Beatles: Everybody’s Got Something to Hide
(via TheBeatles56)

Today this is my favorite Beatles tune; tomorrow it might not be. It was fun finding a version on YouTube with the comment, “What a brilliant song. I believe there is a message here…. [T]he world we live in, the truth is a lie, etc. Think about it.” (Uh. I’m pretty sure that’s how Charles Manson got started.) Here’s the message: John Lennon loved absurd wordplay. As he told a poor, half-starved, nearly psychotic hippie who had been camping on his property for days in hopes of meeting Lennon, “Yeah, I was just having fun with words. It was literally a nonsense song. I mean, Dylan does that. Anybody does that, you know? You just take words, and you stick them together and see if they have any meaning. Some of them do, some of them don’t.” [As an aside, Lennon also said, “Music is everybody’s possession. It’s only publishers who think that people own it.” One more and I’ll stop: “You have to be a bastard to make it, and that’s a fact. And the Beatles are the biggest bastards on earth.” I’ll say it again: John David Chapman shot the wrong Beatle.]

It takes a brave person to “take words, and you stick them together and see if they have any meaning.” When I was a kid, I could do it. Now I can’t.

When I was a kid I could also sing, draw, and dance.

I think I need to work on that.
